As contagious as the COVID-19 virus is, emotions of anxiety and fear are far more contagious, as they can get passed on just by viewing images and video. One thing we can do to address these anxieties is to get accurate information and to limit our exposure to inaccurate information, perhaps going on a "media diet" that limits social media and certain news outlets and only allows more reliable and valid source of information such as the World Health Organization (WHO), an international and non-partisan organization that exists to serve the health needs of all who citizens of this planet. TIPS FOR PARENTS: TALKING TO CHILDREN ABOUT COVID-19
Parents, here are some tips from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) on how to talk to children about the coronavirus in a calm and productive manner that supports their social-emotional functioning. Also, here are some free resources for homeschooling your kids (K-6) as well as some other great websites for academic content for kids of all ages. Some children may be experiencing or witnessing racially charged incidents against Asians and Asian-Americans. COPING WITH STRESS: TIPS FOR DEALING WITH FEAR AND ANXIETY IN A PANDEMIC
One of the foundations to managing stress, anxiety, and fear during this time is making sure you are maintaining a regular routine as much as possible that includes meeting basic needs, such as sleep, exercise, and nutrition. Additionally, focus on physical distancing without emotional distance; you can use video chat and phone calls to stay connected with people. Lastly, address your mind and your body. Challenge negative thoughts with rational ones and visualize using guided imagery and practice body-calming exercises like diaphragmatic breathing (also known as belly breathing) and progressive muscle relaxation techniques.
